Welcome to Milton Abbot Primary School on the edge of Dartmoor in West Devon

A Place of Happiness and Learning for All

I  would like to warmly welcome you to Milton Abbot School. Having just recently arrived as the Headteacher I have been overwhelmed by the aspiration of pupils and staff alike. We are launching an exciting new curriculum this term and both staff and children have responded positively to the many changes across the school. We are committed to create an ambitious, forward thinking learning environment for all our pupils, students and Staff. The school has recently formed a management partnership with Dartmoor Academy. We are excited about the opportunities that such a cross phase Trust is able to offer our community. There will be opportunities for everyone connected to the Trust to grow and develop and therefore fulfil their ambitions.
With the Trust comprising 17 schools, both primary and secondary, over 5000 pupils/students and 750 adults, this is a truly exciting Trust to be involved with.
We will shortly be relaunching our Toddler Group and during the Summer our Early years will benefit from an additional building.

What is important to everyone is that Milton Abbot retains its individuality and special features, whilst benefitting from being part of caring and aspirational community.
We invite you to check out all we have to offer, just 11 minutes from Tavistock town centre and 18 minutes from Launceston: there is little doubt that our beautiful grounds complete with forest school woods, garden pavilion and enormous multi-use games area make the first impression on any visitor. However, the lasting impression we make is through our passion for learning, the care we offer our children (including breakfast club (£4 a session) and after school clubs (for just £1), and our determination that every child will achieve their potential and beyond.

If your child is starting school in September 2022 (or even September 2023), is ready to start pre-school or you are looking for a change, then we warmly welcome visits to suit you. Call Milton Abbot Primary School on 01822 870273.

Best wishes, Mrs Debbie Buckingham

Reading Updates

We love reading at Milton Abbot School, as any of our children will tell you! We have several exciting new ambitions for the start of this term, some of them inspired by the 'The Reading Framework' (DfE, July 2021), including:
  • Reading Review to quality assure our systems and strategies, which includes 'Pupil Voice' conferencing to ensure we view school through our pupils' eyes
  • 'Reading Mileage' - encouraging the development of fluency by continuing to read daily at school and regularly at home
  • ensure diversity is represented in the books children read and share, such as 'Hidden Figures' (below) as enjoyed in Barn Owls
As the Reading Team, myself as English leader and Miss King as Early Reading Coordinator, we continuously monitor the standards of phonics, fluency and language development - through this we know that our children are meeting the Milton Abbot vision to be 'Reading for Knowledge, Reading for Pleasure'.
Better never stops!

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY - The Incredible Years!
Little Owls Early Years Class: Nursery and Reception

Inspire - Believe - Succeed
At Little Owls, our child-centred approach means our highly-qualified team, led by our Early Years Specialist teacher, ensure that all our activities are designed to nurture the whole child, so they succeed and grow emotionally and intellectually - all with a smile and a giggle! Little Owls is a wonderful place to play and learn and we find that the children really benefit moving up to their Reception year in the same place they enjoyed their Nursery year.

They can explore indoors in the water, sand, cookery room or role-play and outdoors in their forest school wellies amongst the trees, giving children a great start to their education and friendships that will last a lifetime. Through stimulating situations and hands-on learning that will brighten any young mind, we are proud of what we can offer and how this blends into the Early Years of our popular Primary School, and as a result our popularity continually grows making available places limited depending on the time of year, so get in early  - we always welcome a visit.

If your child is about to turn 3 years old, then we warmly welcome visits to suit you. Call Milton Abbot Primary School on 01822 870273 or email: admin@miltonabbot.devon.sch.uk.

Our Reading Roost

Reading for knowledge, reading for pleasure! Reading is central to our teaching and learning at Milton Abbot School, and a key challenge is to ensure children are not only enjoying their reading but are keen to challenge themselves to read widely, which helps build vocabulary and comprehension skills. Both of our girls have done their entire primary years at Milton Abbot School and we couldn't be happier with the education they have received. They have thrived in the nurturing and inclusive environment, with incredible support from not only excellent teachers, but from every single member of staff in the school. Everyone is made to feel truly welcome, children and parents alike. The school and grounds are idyllic, our children have spent so many happy times playing on the daisy covered front lawn and climbing trees in the woods. We couldn't have asked for a better foundation for our girls and would absolutely recommend this school to everyone!

We have two children at Milton Abbot and couldn't be happier with the school. We moved school early on due to a bad experience elsewhere. From that experience and from my own time at school, I had thought that schools were not joyful places but the first thing you notice entering Milton Abbot is the warm, friendly and happy atmosphere generated by both pupils and staff. The headteacher and teachers are fantastic, the building and grounds are beautiful and the range of extra activities available to the children is exemplary (and fun!): forest school, music, drama, coding, climbing and sport amongst others, as well as trips to the beach and the theatre.

Another thing we love is that the teachers use the garden and grounds in their teaching - so the class go outside to learn about science, art, engineering or history, e.g. building a Roman road in the grounds, cooking with apples they have grown, or constructing a bee hotel in the garden.

Milton Abbot offers our children a caring learning environment, in which they are recognised and valued as individuals. The school gives our children diverse curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, allowing and encouraging them to grow their interests and giving great foundational knowledge and understanding.

My daughter, who was struggling academically on arrival at the school, has  flourished under the personal and caring attention of her teachers and is now reading and writing well above her age level. The confidence of both my children has grown at the school, both in their learning and in their relationships with others. They say they even quite like it when they fall over and hurt themselves at Milton Abbot because Mrs Jones takes their injuries very seriously and gives them plasters/compresses while Mr Luxford tells them jokes and says encouraging and positive things about them. It is hard to imagine a better start in education. Learning to love learning is probably the greatest gift a school can bestow and Milton Abbot has done this and more. Thank you for all you do.

The school has a very supportive team and leadership is fast to help where extra support is needed. There is a lot of outdoor space and regular forest school.
