Milton Abbot School's Reading Roost
Welcome to our Milton Abbot School Reading Roost – our home for reading! On this page you will find information about our Reading Curriculum and our Reading Provision overview as well as how we like to promote and celebrate great reading efforts and progress.
We aim for every child to be reading for pleasure and reading for knowledge as early as can be! We do this through a carefully sequenced and systematic phonics programme, with each new sound being linked to our home reading books, as well as a commitment to pupils enjoying their reading, being challenged to read widely and deeply, as well as daily teaching inputs and opportunities to read. Our commitment to reading has resulted in our children being above National for Reading and in the top 1% of schools in 2018. However, we look beyond the data - we look for every child to be a reader for life.

Supporting your Child with Home Reading
Epic Reading - Enjoying Reading at School and Home
EPIC Reading is an online reading platform of over 40,000 high quality books by over 250 authors.
The children actively engage with it at school to read all types of texts (across all subject areas) as well as having additional and exciting books to read at home. Here is what some of our pupil say about it:
"I really like EPIC Reading because there are loads of books I enjoy reading on it." (Kian, Year 6)
"I can read pretty much any book I like and can do it from home." (Freddie, Year 5)
Visit either www.getepic.com/promo or click on the Epic picture above to set up a home account so your child can access this fantastic reading platform away from school. It is free, easy and takes only minutes.

Read Write Inc - a systematic approach to early readingOur Early Reading Leader, Mrs Grace Baldwin, introduced the 'Read Write Inc' phonics/reading scheme in September 2020, which systematically builds the reading skills of our youngest readers. The children tell us that they love it, and we have seen fantastic progress for every child, including in their independence.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a whole-school approach to teaching literacy for 4 to 9-year olds that creates fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. It integrates phonics with comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting, using engaging partner work and drama. Mrs Baldwin, as a fully trained RWI practitioner regularly leads assessment across school, working closely with the teaching and learning team to ensure the highest possible standards are delivered. Alongside this scheme, we also ensure a rich variety of texts are enjoyed and explored through daily reading in class; every subject is linked to a key text and reading opportunities are threaded throughout the day and week. Reading with your child: a video by our Early Reading LeaderIn this video Mrs Baldwin, our Early Reading Leader, enjoys a reading session with a pupil to model how to help your child using the new 'Read Write Inc' reading scheme at home. Mrs Baldwin introduced this scheme from September and we have already seen some great results. Thank you for all your reading efforts at home - don't forget to read story books to your child as well and talk about what you have read.
Reading with your child: Understanding Read Write IncYour child will learn to read in a very simple way. He or she will learn to: 1. Read letters by their ‘sounds’
2. Blend these sounds into words 3. Read the words in a story. The below two documents (that have also been sent via Class Dojo) includes information on: 1. How to help your child read Speed Sounds 2. Helping your child read words 3. Helping your child read the Sound Blending Books 4. Helping your child read the Storybooks 5. How to listen to your child read_write_inc_booklet_1.pdf

Reading for knowledge, reading for pleasure: V.I.P.E.R.S comprehension skills
As a child develops their fluency, we also teach key comprehension skills, which are supported by our VIPERS scheme. We take every opportunity to practice and promote the value of reading, by ensuring it is a ‘golden thread’ running through every area of knowledge: from reading biographies of amazing artists to stories from the bible, as well as researching key historical information and geographical explanations.
We track reading choices very carefully, because we want children to learn to challenge themselves with their reading choices by reading widely and deeply. We believe that this will give them a wider and richer vocabulary, which is great for their communication skills, as part of our Expressive Curriculum.
