Physical Education at Milton Abbot School

Our Vision for P.E. at Milton Abbot School

At Milton Abbot School we start with the National Curriculum requirements for Physical Education but always aim to offer a whole lot more, as we know that healthy bodies can help grow healthy minds!
P.E. Skills Progression

Learning

At Milton Abbot School we follow the National Curriculum requirements for Physical Education, Health and Well-being throughout the academic year. All pupils undertake gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming, outdoor and adventurous activities. Every child will take part in Forest School activities using our school woods. The children in Years 5 and 6 will also experience an outdoor and adventurous residential trip in the summer term! The children and staff have an opportunity to experience a wider variety of sport with specialist sports coaches. We currently have links with Tavistock College Community Sports Centre, OCRA West Devon Sport, Mark Wickett Soccer School and Mount Kelly Swimming Pool. This includes Multi-skills and football, on a weekly basis, with Mark Wickett Soccer School.

Specialist coaches teach swimming to Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils at Mount Kelly Pool in Tavistock. Throughout the year the children will also experience alternative sports with OCRA, this includes: rugby, basketball, fencing and much more!

The school grounds for PE include a sports field, MUGA (Multi use games area), school hall, front lawn, playground along with garden areas.

Extra curricular sports and physical activities

We are currently able to offer a wide range of activities after school and at lunchtimes, this includes football, cross country, dance, seasonal club, music, athletics, hockey, tag rugby, skipping, forest school, art and gardening. We hope to develop the children’s interest for life along with promoting healthy lifestyles.

The Government has provided additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2014/2015, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18 and 2018/19, to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding in order to improve the provision of physical education and sport in primary schools. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.

Our Sports Charter

Our goal at Milton Abbot School is for every child to experience the benefits to be found from enjoying physical exercise and sport, for a healthy body and mind. We are determined, under our ‘Every Child Endeavouring’ scheme, that every child shall represent our school at a competition, tournament or festival, so they can feel that thrill of taking part and overcome any ‘fear of failure’ that may dwell within.

Our Sports Code
Our Sports Code, originally devised by our Pupil Parliament, represents our shared belief that sport should promote competitiveness, fairness, a spirit of risk and adventure, strong and healthy minds and bodies, along with a willingness to try something new. Every child should perform with pride, whether the sport they are learning is in the hall, MUGA or field, during a lesson, at an event or with friends on the playground. Our sporting values are:

  • Respect
  • Teamwork
  • Enjoyment
  • Discipline
  • Fairness
