Welcome to the Milton Abbot School Safeguarding Circle

We take our duty of care and responsibility for promoting healthy welfare very seriously. We are all fully committed to the Department for Education statement: ‘Everyone has a duty to safeguard children and protect them from harm.’ This is taken from the DfE document ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education': (Sept 2022)

Our ‘Safeguarding Circle’ represents the robust, joined up systems at Milton Abbot School that encircle our children to fully protect and shield them from harm. 'Keeping Children Safe in Education', lists such possible harm as: abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect.

Staff members working with children are advised to maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ and ‘it could be happening to this child’, where safeguarding is concerned. When concerned about the welfare of a child, staff members should always act in the best interests of the child.

Our Early Help Offer
Milton Abbot Primary School works to provide Early Help to those children and families in the school community with emerging needs, which may not be appropriate for Social Services intervention. Early help means providing support to our children and families as soon as a problem emerges, at any point in a child’s life.
We understand just how complicated family life can be. From time to time, there may be situations where you need some extra help and support.
If things are not right at home, please come and talk to us.
We can help in many ways.

Successful Early Help will mean:
Children:
  • are physically and emotionally healthy
  • are resilient and able to learn well
  • are supported by their families, community and (when necessary) professionals in order to thrive
  • live in safe environments

Parents and Carers:
  • support one another in the community
  • know where to get help if needed
  • have trusted relationships with school, community, other parents
  • are well informed about how best to help their child develop and motivated to make great choices.

The Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub

One such agency, and a central cog in the Devon safeguarding system is the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).

The MASH is the central resource for the Devon local Authority area receiving all serious safeguarding and child protection enquiries. The MASH is staffed with professionals from a range of agencies including police, probation, fire, ambulance, health, education and social care. These professionals share information to ensure early identification of potential significant harm, and trigger interventions to prevent further harm to children. Telephone: 0345 155 1071.
