Geography

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."Saint Augustine

At Milton Abbot School, our Geography curriculum inspires children to develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for life. Through the study of places, people, environments and natural processes, children gain a deeper understanding of the world around them and their place within it.

Our curriculum enables pupils to explore the diverse physical and human features of the United Kingdom and the wider world. Through enquiry, investigation and fieldwork, children develop geographical knowledge and skills whilst learning about the relationships between people, places and the environment. We encourage pupils to ask questions, interpret information and consider how the world is changing and how they can contribute positively to its future.

Our curriculum helps children to:

  • Develop knowledge of local, national and global geography.
  • Understand the physical and human features of different places.
  • Use maps, atlases, photographs and digital technologies confidently.
  • Develop fieldwork and geographical enquiry skills.
  • Understand environmental issues and sustainability.
  • Make connections between people, places and cultures across the world.

Our school values are at the heart of Geography:

Mindfulness

Geography encourages children to appreciate and care for the world around them. Through studying local environments, natural landscapes and global challenges, pupils develop an awareness of how their actions can impact others and the planet. They learn to value different cultures, communities and ways of life whilst becoming thoughtful and responsible global citizens.

Ambition

Children are inspired to think beyond their immediate surroundings and develop a global perspective. By exploring different countries, environments and cultures, pupils broaden their horizons and develop aspirations for the future. They are encouraged to ask ambitious questions about the world and seek meaningful answers through enquiry and investigation.

Perseverance

Geography develops resilience through problem-solving, critical thinking and investigation. Whether interpreting maps, analysing data or conducting fieldwork, pupils learn that understanding complex geographical issues takes time, effort and careful consideration. They are encouraged to persevere when tackling challenging questions and exploring different viewpoints.

Success

Every child is given opportunities to succeed as a young geographer. Through developing their knowledge, skills and understanding of the world, pupils gain confidence in explaining geographical concepts, presenting findings and making informed decisions. Success is celebrated through curiosity, effort, achievement and a growing understanding of the world's diversity.

Our local environment provides valuable opportunities for hands-on geographical learning. Through fieldwork and exploration of the surrounding area, children develop a sense of place while making connections to wider regional, national and global themes. They learn that geography is not just about studying the world—it is about understanding how people and places are connected.

By the time they leave Milton Abbot School, our children will be inquisitive, knowledgeable and responsible geographers. They will have a strong understanding of their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, alongside the skills and confidence needed to engage thoughtfully with the opportunities and challenges of an ever-changing planet.
