EYFS Curriculum
"Children are not things to be moulded, but people to be unfolded." – Jess Lair
At Milton Abbot School, we believe that every child deserves a happy, nurturing and inspiring start to their education. Our Early Years curriculum provides a rich, engaging environment where children feel safe, valued and encouraged to explore, discover and learn through play.
We recognise that children learn best when they are active participants in their learning. Through carefully planned adult-led activities and child-initiated exploration, we support the development of the whole child across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We cultivate curiosity, independence and confidence while ensuring every child feels a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Develop confident, happy and independent learners.
- Foster curiosity and a love of learning.
- Build strong foundations in communication, language and early literacy.
- Develop mathematical understanding through practical experiences.
- Encourage creativity, imagination and problem-solving.
- Support children's physical, social and emotional development.
- Prepare children successfully for the next stage of their education.
Our school values are woven throughout every aspect of life in the Early Years:
Mindfulness
We encourage children to become aware of their feelings, emotions and the world around them. Through play, reflection, storytelling, outdoor learning and positive relationships, children learn to regulate their emotions, develop empathy and appreciate the experiences of others. We create calm, nurturing spaces where children feel listened to, respected and valued.
Ambition
We believe every child is capable of achieving great things. Children are encouraged to be curious, try new experiences and challenge themselves in their learning. By celebrating effort, creativity and achievement, we help children develop confidence in their abilities and a belief that they can succeed.
Perseverance
Learning is a journey that involves practice, resilience and determination. In Early Years, children learn that mistakes help us to grow and improve. Whether learning to write, build, solve problems or make new friendships, children are encouraged to keep trying, develop resilience and take pride in their progress.
Success
Success is celebrated in all its forms. We recognise and value every achievement, from taking a first step in learning to reaching personal goals. By building confidence and self-belief, we help children develop a positive attitude towards learning and an understanding that success comes through effort, perseverance and a willingness to learn.
Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully designed to spark curiosity, creativity and exploration. Children learn through meaningful experiences, practical activities, imaginative play and high-quality interactions that help them make sense of the world around them.
By the time they leave the Early Years at Milton Abbot School, our children will be confident, independent and enthusiastic learners. They will have developed strong foundations in knowledge, skills and personal development, ready to embrace future learning with Mindfulness, Ambition, Perseverance and Success at the heart of all they do.
