The Prevent Duty is...

From 1st July 2015, all schools have been subject to a duty under Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 to have 'due regard to the need to Prevent people from being drawn into terrorism'. This is usually referred to as the Prevent Duty. At the centre of the duty is a requirement to identify children and young people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation. Schools must be aware of the steps they should take when such children and young people have been identified.

At Milton Abbot School we have very clear systems and a strong message: Everyone has a duty to safeguard children and protect them from harm. We discuss safeguarding issues every week at staff meetings, sharing information and concerns to ensure we have a safety net to stop our children falling into harm. The Prevent Duty is regularly discussed and is promoted in poster form in every classroom, which reads: 'Notice, Check, Share'. All concerns are reported to Mr. Christopher Luxford, the Headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Leader, who will follow recognised national and local procedures. As a school we always 'think the unthinkable' and are supported very closely by  Mr. Christopher Smerdon, our Safeguarding Governor.

'Brilliant Britain' at Milton Abbot School...

All schools are under a duty to promote fundamental British values actively. As a school we are committed to promoting:

  • Values of democracy how people can influence decision-making through the democratic process

  • The rule of law that living under the rule of law protects people

  • Individual liberty the right to choose other faiths and beliefs is protected in law

  • Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths people with other faiths and beliefs should be accepted and tolerated

We are committed to promoting such values through:

  • Comparing how democracy and the law works in Britain in contrast to other forms of government

  • Enabling the voice of pupils to be heard

  • Demonstrating how democracy works, though voting and mock elections

  • Teaching about a range of faiths

  • Considering extra-curricular activity that promotes these values

We have a Brilliant Britain Scheme of work. We also enjoy assemblies with exciting guests, including Sir Isaac Newton and William Shakespeare.
