Who can be a Governor?
School governors are people who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. No special qualifications are required, but enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education are important qualities to bring to a governor post.
Governors are the largest volunteer force in the country.
Governors work in partnership with the head teacher and other school staff to promote high standards of educational achievement at the school.

The Governing body aims to maintain a balance of members Parent, Community and Staff Governors.
What is the role of the Governing Body?
Governing body responsibilities include:
· Acting as a ‘critical friend’ to the head teacher by providing support and challenge
· Setting strategic direction, objectives, targets and policies
· Reviewing progress against the budget, plans and targets
· Ensuring the school is accountable to those it serves
· Monitoring and evaluating school performance
· Approving the school budget
New Governors are expected to join a sub-committees (see below) but will be assisted by a mentor throughout their early days!
These smaller committees meet prior to the Full Governing Body and are more focused on their own specialist areas of governance, the outcomes of these meetings is then relayed to the Full Governing Body.
Governors are actively encouraged to adopt a specialist area which they feel they can develop or take ownership of either as a working group or as an individual. This could be for example; Safeguarding, Buildings and Premises, Special Education Needs and so forth.
This specialist area will be under the approval and ongoing evaluation of the Governing Body and aims to allow individual interests and specialist skills of Governors to have a positive impact on the school.
The Governing Body consists of 10 Governors. There are 4 Parent Governors (elected), 3 Community Governors (appointed), 1 LEA Governor (appointed) and 2 Staff Governors.
